Tripletail are the odd, round, leaf-mimicking fish you sight-cast to on floats and markers off Sarasota, and the fishery runs on one date: stone crab trap season, October 15 through May 1. While the buoy lines are in, run them in 10–30 ft off Longboat Key, Siesta, Casey Key, Venice and Boca Grande with a live shrimp ready. Typical fish go 2–8 lb, the table quality ranks with snapper, and the 2026 rules are 18 inches minimum, two per person.

What is a tripletail and why does it float on its side?

A tripletail’s dorsal and anal fins sweep back near the tail, so the fish reads as three tails — hence the name. The behavior is the real ID: it lies flat on its side at the surface next to buoys, markers and floating debris, imitating a dead leaf or a drifting grass mat. Shrimp, crabs and small baitfish drift close; the “leaf” eats them. The FWC tripletail species profile covers the biology.

That surface-loafing habit makes tripletail one of the few true sight-fishing targets on this coast — you find the fish first, then make one good cast.

When is tripletail season in Sarasota?

Open year-round by regulation. In practice, the calendar is the stone crab trap season — October 15 through May 1, closed on May 2 (FWC stone crab regulations) — because thousands of trap buoys turn the nearshore gulf into a tripletail neighborhood. Traps may go in the water up to 10 days before the opener, so the buoy lines start appearing in the first week of October.

MonthWhat to expect
January–FebruaryFish on trap buoys nearshore; best on warm, calm days
MarchGood — trap lines still in through the month
AprilPeak — buoys, markers, debris; warming water, active fish
MayGood the first days; traps pull May 2 and fish scatter to markers
June–JulyChannel markers, ledges, floating debris; found while running the beach for tarpon
August–SeptemberScattered; check debris lines after storms
OctoberFall trigger — traps redeploy October 15 and buoy lines reload
November–DecemberStrong — the classic winter sight-fishery in 10–30 ft

Where do you find tripletail near Sarasota?

  • Stone crab trap lines in 10–30 ft off Longboat Key, Lido, Siesta, Casey Key and Venice — and the long lines off the Boca Grande and Charlotte Harbor beaches are some of the best on the coast.
  • Channel markers: ICW markers in Sarasota Bay and lower Tampa Bay, the Big Pass and New Pass markers, and Venice Inlet markers hold fish year-round.
  • Floating debris and weed lines nearshore, especially after fronts and storms.
  • The corridor from Big Pass and New Pass out to the M-reefs 7–9 miles off the beach is tripletail water — the same water that holds cobia on markers and Spanish mackerel over the reefs.

Traps like these go out by the thousand from mid-October. Every one carries a float, and the floats are the fishery.

To hunt a buoy line: run parallel to it on plane with one spotter on the bow. Fish hold on the down-tide, downwind side of the float, usually within a foot of it. Sun overhead from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., light wind, and polarized glasses are the difference between seeing twenty fish and seeing none. A light chop hides them; calm days after a front stack them up.

How do you catch tripletail on crab trap buoys?

This is sight-casting, full stop. The approach matters more than the bait.

  1. Spot the fish, kill your forward speed, and set up down-tide.
  2. Cast past the fish and bring the bait to it — landing a shrimp on its head sinks it.
  3. If the fish spooks under the buoy, leave it. Rest it 20–30 minutes and come back; it will usually float back up.

One of these, free-lined on a bare hook, is the whole bait program. A tripletail lies under floating cover waiting for exactly this to drift past.
  • Bait: a live shrimp is #1, free-lined on a 1/0–2/0 circle or J hook with 20–30 lb fluorocarbon leader. Small live crabs also work. Rig details in our live bait guide.
  • Artificials: DOA shrimp, a CAL jig with a shrimp tail, or a small white bucktail — the standard on Capt. Jim Klopfer’s Sarasota charters.
  • Fly: shrimp and small crab patterns on a floating line, 20 lb bite tippet.
  • Tackle: 3000–4000 spinning reel, 10–15 lb braid. Hooked fish jump and immediately try to wrap the trap rope — steer them away hard in the first ten seconds. BoatUS’s tripletail primer covers the fight well.

One hard rule: never touch, pull, lift or tie off to a trap or buoy. Molesting stone crab gear is illegal in Florida and it’s somebody’s livelihood. Fish near the float, not on it.

Held like this the name explains itself — the dorsal and anal fins sweep back so far they read as two extra tails.

What conditions are best for spotting tripletail?

Three variables decide the day:

  • Light: sun overhead, roughly 10 a.m.–3 p.m. Flat morning light hides fish that are obvious at noon.
  • Wind: under 10 knots. A light chop breaks up the surface and you’ll run past fish all day.
  • Tide: a slow-moving tide positions fish predictably on the down-tide side of each float; slack water scatters the pattern.

The best single window all winter: the first calm, sunny day two or three days after a cold front, on a moderate tide. Fish stack on the buoys, the water is clean, and you can see them 40 yards off the bow.

Measured nose to tail on the board. Eighteen inches total length is the 2026 FWC minimum, and plenty of trap-line fish land just under it.

The Florida state record is 40.81 lb, taken at Fort Pierce on March 4, 1998 (state saltwater records). A Sarasota fish over 10 lb is a genuine trophy.

Are tripletail good to eat?

Excellent — firm, white fillets that locals rank with snapper and grouper. The 2-fish bag reflects that. A legal 18–20” fish yields two thick fillets; ice it whole and fillet it at home.

The calm-water, short-run, watch-then-cast nature of this fishery also makes it one of the best winter trips on this coast for kids — more engaging than soaking bait, and every fish is caught by sight.

FAQ

Why do tripletail float on their side? Camouflage. Lying flat at the surface, a tripletail mimics a dead leaf or grass mat, ambushing shrimp and small fish that drift by.

Is it legal to fish crab trap buoys in Florida? Fishing near them, yes. Touching, pulling or tying to a trap or buoy, no — that’s molesting commercial gear and carries penalties.

What’s the best bait for tripletail? A free-lined live shrimp on a 1/0–2/0 hook with 20–30 lb fluorocarbon. DOA shrimp and small white bucktails are the top artificials.

When is stone crab season in Florida? October 15 through May 1, closed May 2. Those dates bracket the best tripletail fishing of the year off Sarasota.

How big do tripletail get here? Most local fish run 2–8 lb. Ten-pounders happen every season on the Boca Grande lines; the state record is 40.81 lb.

The same winter buoy runs produce more than tripletail: cobia cruise the markers, Spanish mackerel and pompano work the passes on the way out, and the deep flats hold snook staging for spring. String them together and a calm January morning inside 9 miles is a four-species day.
